Holiday travel can be hard on your body. Long flights, road trips, heavy luggage, and hours of sitting often trigger neck stiffness, low-back pain, and even sciatic flare-ups. With a few simple strategies, you can reduce discomfort and arrive feeling your best!
Before You Go: Prep Your Body
- Schedule an adjustment or massage to reduce tension before long trips.
- Pack support items: lumbar cushion, neck pillow, reusable water bottle, and magnesium.
- Lift luggage safely—bend at the knees, not at the waist.
On the Road or In the Air
Support Your Spine
- Keep hips slightly higher than knees to reduce low-back pressure.
- Use lumbar support (a rolled sweatshirt works).
- Drop your shoulders away from your ears—especially when scrolling or driving.
Stay Hydrated
Travel dehydration is real—and dehydrated muscles become tight muscles. Aim to drink water consistently throughout your trip, and add electrolytes if you're flying long-distance.
Move Often
- Stretch during layovers
- Walk the airport loop
- Stop at rest areas on long drives
- Do ankle circles and calf raises in your seat
Small, frequent movement (every 30-60 min if possible) is better than one big stretch session.
Sleeping While Traveling
Use a supportive neck pillow that keeps your head aligned. Slightly recline your seat (not fully flat) and keep your knees softly bent to avoid nerve compression.
After You Arrive
- Do gentle stretching within hours of arrival. Your hips and low back will thank you.
- Avoid collapsing onto a couch. A short walk first helps reset your spine.
- Book a post-travel adjustment or massage. It’s one of the quickest ways to undo stiffness and restore alignment—especially after long flights.
