Winter is here, and with it comes the season of sniffles, colds, and flu. Don’t let winter illness take you down — there are simple steps you can take to keep your body strong and your immune system in tip-top shape:

1. Boost Your Immune System: A strong immune system is your best defense against illness. To help support immune function:

  • Eat a balanced diet: Include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and foods rich in vitamins C, D, and zinc.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body functioning optimally.
  • Exercise regularly: Moderate activity can strengthen your immune system.Sleep well: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep to help your body repair and resist illness

2. Get Some Fresh Air: I know, much easier said than done during a PNW winter, but even a brisk walk or light stretching can improve circulation and support your body's natural defenses. And on the days that the sun is shining, soak it up as much as you can!

3. Up The Humidity: Winter air can dry out your skin and mucous membranes, which can make it easier for germs to invade. Use a humidifier in your home to keep moisture in the air! Bonus points for adding a few drops of calming essential oils like Lavender or Chamomile!

4. Manage Stress

  • Practice mindfulness or meditation: Chronic stress can weaken the immune system.
  • Take breaks: Allow yourself downtime to recharge mentally and physically.

And of course, always wash your hands after being out in public spaces like the grocery store or at work. Stay proactive this winter — your immune system will thank you!

If you do get sick, be gentle on yourself! Rest, up the Vitamin C intake, and allow yourself to fully heal before jumping back into the swing of things.
